Some tips to help you get the most out of your recruiter…

Last week we looked at some of the good and bad practises employed within recruitment and how competition within the industry can actually drive the quality of service down. Many recruiters end up pushing square pegs in to round holes and the client ends up paying for a service that does not add any genuine value to their business.

Considering that the end product delivered by a Recruitment Consultant is arguably the most valuable asset within your business it is vitally important that you get the most from them. Here are a few tips on how to get the best from your Recruitment Consultant:

Meet them!

It may sound like an obvious first step but it is alarming how many businesses are happy to deal with Recruitment Consultants by telephone only.

At Success Recruit we insist that we meet all of our clients. Aside from allowing us to build a client relationship; how can we judge the type of person who will thrive in a business without first visiting the premises and meeting the people already working in it?

For us it is a vital first step on the way to understanding a business and exactly what they are looking for in an employee. For the business, they get peace of mind from knowing that the Recruitment Consultant has taken the time and effort to learn about them and the environment in which prospective candidates will be working.

Be specific

The more specific a client is with us, the more likely we are to get it right!

It is your business and you may be looking for a specific type of person with a specific skill set to come in and help it grow. A good recruiter will always ask a lot of questions in order to get a clear picture of what you are looking for but you can help by providing as much detail as possible.

Often we find out additional criteria for candidates after an initial batch of unsuccessful interviews. Aside from this being a waste of your time and resources it is unnecessary and will not help in developing a good relationship with your recruiter.

Ultimately, you are the ones who will have to work with this person so help us to get it right!

Communicate with them

It is important to put yourself in the shoes of the candidates to understand why communicating with your recruiter is so essential.

Imagine being a candidate who has been to a fantastic job interview with the perfect company and then not hearing anything from the employer for weeks after? It is immensely frustrating for candidates and they often panic and accept another job offer that they were not so keen on. If this was the person you wanted to offer a job, nobody wins.

It is our job to help clients manage the interview process and make sure that the end product is the right employee for their business. By communicating with us we can ensure that, even throughout an elongated recruitment process, candidate’s expectations are managed and that the right one does not get away!

Utilise their knowledge

Recruiters spend all day working in the job market and gain a real sense for what the market place is like at any one time.

They will be able to guide you on the likely availability of candidates for your position, their salary expectations and a range of other issues that you may be interested in.

If you have a good relationship with your recruiter they will be more than happy to talk to you. Utilise this knowledge to your own advantage!
