New Year, New Job?

A New Year is a fresh beginning, and for many a time to start steering their lives in the right direction. Surveys indicate that over half of British workers are miserable in their jobs and want to change career – but how many people are actively doing something about it? Start 2017 in a positive light and aim to land your dream job by the end of the year.

It’s the perfect time to set a career goal and change your life for the better. Perhaps you want to aim for a higher salary or would like a change of pace with flexible working hours. You might feel like you’re in the totally wrong profession or want to go back to college and study for the career you really want. If your current job is not fulfilling and you feel like you have a lot more to give, now is the time to start your job search.

Have a plan

Changing careers isn’t easy and it definitely isn’t instant. You’ll need to be prepared to put a lot of time and effort into finding your perfect job, and the road to success could be long. Develop a plan for what you want, whether it’s the same sort of role with a different company or a completely new career. Find out what the necessary criteria is for your ideal job and develop a plan to get there. You might have to volunteer in the sector to get some experience or gain a new qualification. If you think you have everything you need, you can start applying straight away.

Be confident

When applying for a job, you have to sell yourself. In today’s job market you could be up against hundreds of other applicants, so why should an employer choose you? List all of the reasons why you’re a great employee and good at what you do. Read it every day to remember why you’re awesome and perfect for the role. From the application form to the interview, you should ooze with confidence.

Stay positive

If you’ve applied for lots of jobs and still not been given an interview, or get pipped to the post at the last minute, don’t let it get you down. Bagging yourself the ideal job can take time, and sometimes you may need a bit of help. A recruitment agency may be able to find you a suitable role and offer essential interview advice. Remember to stay positive and don’t give up on the job hunt!
